In acknowledgement of Merrifield’s diverse student population, with the sincere desire to foster transformation and avoid discrimination of any form, Merrifield College supported the formation of the African Society in 2020.

Started by students, the roots of the African Society are in critical thought about the African identity and has 18 members with Mbutokazi Mavuso as Head and Qiqa Penxa as Deputy Head.

“I created this club to foster intellectual Africans who critically analyse their African identity and who question the world and strive to improve it. I also want this club to be a safe space for African children to explore their ideas, feelings and perspectives,” Mbutokazi Mavuso said.

“The club has had the school’s support which I’m very grateful for that from the beginning and I think that, combined with the students’ dedication and commitment, the club can achieve these two goals.”
