Merrifield College has embraced the challenge of The President’s Award (TPA) programme.
The 30-year-old programme started in South Africa as the Gold Shield Award, and was re-launched in 1994 as The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment with then South African President, Nelson Mandela, as the founding Patron-in-Chief.
The aim of the awards programme is to motivate young people to become involved in a balanced challenge of voluntary self-development activities to take them through the potentially difficult period between adolescence and adulthood.
Two words sum up the challenge: Initiative and Perseverance.
Merrifield embraces the programme as a wholesome and prestigious challenge and the College registered its first participants in the President’s Award Scheme in 2007.
Merrifield has also hosted the Eastern Cape Youth Forum in 2013 where 150 young people from around the Eastern Cape deliberating in the hall having been addressed by Minister Trevor Manuel.
