This year saw the growth of the Outdoor Education extra-mural program as part of the bigger goal towards expanding the Outdoor Education and Adventure offering at Merrifield. One of the highlights of 2023 was the opening of the 4km Hiking and MTB trail on the Merrifield Campus. The trail is a challenging walk through the adjacent valley and features beautiful forest and farmland single track.
Every Thursday afternoon students explore, learn and develop outdoor skills in their natural environment. We enjoyed outings to nature reserves, local trail parks, beaches and private farms. Training sessions focused on basic species identification, wilderness first aid, birding basics, environmental awareness, outdoor cooking and basic survival skills.
There was also opportunity to connect with the Hudson Park Outdoor members for trail walks, an obstacle course activity and paddle on our school dam. This is part of our goal to develop relationships and participate in combined outdoor activities. Some students were also able to participate and support the annual Lilyfontein Adventure Race, requiring them to run, cycle and paddle, whilst navigating the 60km course.
We look forward to the continued development of the Outdoor Education and Adventure offering at Merrifield and will keep sharing our passion for adventure with our outdoor communities.
