Started in 2018, the POP group is made up of students from each grade in the College.
- We aim to nurture three core areas in our school:
- We strive to encourage students to get involved in various community projects in our city
- We are passionate about creating an environmental consciousness in our school
- We want every single student to know that they are loved and valued; we focus on nurturing our inclusive environment
As a group we have been so excited to see the impacts of our work really taking shape here at Merrifield. Weekly meetings enable us to put our heads together and come up with creative ways to implement our ideas.
POP students initiated and completed ‘The Bathroom Project’, symbolising women supporting women. Filled with creativity and a determination to uplift one of the girl’s bathrooms, POP set out on their mission to renew the Grade 7 girls bathroom. This new space is an area where sisterhood is celebrated and women support each other.
We encouraged our Merrifield community to support African Angels School with their period poverty initiative. We want to see girls being empowered and to stay in school so that they too can become leaders in their communities.
African Angels has started an amazing project making and selling reusable sanitary pads.
Some of our favourite memories of 2022 include: The Medal Project, Love Sandwiches, Women’s month, The Dress Project, World Rhino Day, Earth Day and spending time together as a team.
When passion meets purpose, we can create wonderful change. In our school, in our communities and in our country. We thank everyone for opening their hearts and minds to making our community and country a better place for all.
