People of Passion (POP)
Started in 2018, the POP group is made up of students from each grade in the College. We aim to nurture three core areas in our school:
We strive to encourage students to get involved in various community projects in our city
We are passionate about creating an environmental consciousness in our school
We want every single student to know that they are loved and valued; we focus on nurturing our inclusive environment
As a group we have been so excited to see the impacts of our work really taking shape here at Merrifield. Weekly meetings enable us to put our heads together and come up with creative ways to implement our ideas.
Two projects which were started in 2018 are flourishing due to the incredible support of the student body. Love Sandwiches and Courageous Conversations have been so well supported and for that we say thank you to everyone involved. Our weekly Love Sandwich collection goes to Zubenathi Daycare in Beacon Bay. Some of our Courageous Conversation topics this year have included Anxiety, Body Image and Sex Ed. Here are a few of our other memories from this year:
Working closely with the SRC and seeing them do another wonderful morning session where each student got to make a sandwich for our Love Sandwich collection.
Honouring Women’s Day by making each young women a small card to acknowledge their value.
Holding a vigil in the hall in solidarity with our country as we stand against the violence and abuse of women and children in our country.
Holding a civvies day for World Rhino Day to support Protect Africa’s Wildlife (PAWS) initiative.
Introducing the 5th challenge to the Big 4 Challenge which aims to reduce our single-use plastic on campus. We have encouraged students to not use balloons on campus to celebrate birthdays or events. Dr Guy Hartley granted permission for students to wear civvies instead.
We thank everyone for opening their hearts and minds to making our community and country a better place for all. – Chay Bachar and the POP crew
