Started in 2018, the POP group is made up of students from each grade in the College.
We aim to nurture three core areas in our school:
We strive to encourage students to get involved in various community projects in our city
We are passionate about creating an environmental consciousness in our school
We want every single student to know that they are loved and valued; we focus on nurturing our inclusive environment
As a group we have been so excited to see the impacts of our work really taking shape here at Merrifield. Weekly meetings enable us to put our heads together and come up with creative ways to implement our ideas.
In 2021, for Mandela Day, we encouraged our Merrifield community to support African Angels School with their period poverty initiative. We want to see girls being empowered and to stay in school so that they too can become leaders in their communities.
African Angels has started an amazing project making and selling reusable sanitary pads.
We love that the project is local and employs local women. We also love that the pads are environmentally friendly. Period poverty means that some girls miss school due to their periods; we feel this project is creating an opportunity to change this.
Earlier in 2021, POP students initiated and completed ‘The Bathroom Project’, symbolising women supporting women. Filled with creativity and a determination to uplift one of the girl’s bathrooms, POP set out on their mission to renew the Grade 7 girls bathroom. This new space is an area where sisterhood is celebrated and women support each other.
Behind each toilet door is a small basket of sanitary products as part of the project as well as a collection point for the donation of sanitary products for a local organisation we are sourcing. Many girls in our country face unique obstacles to schooling and we believe every girl should be educated to empower communities.
Quotes on the wall foster unity, empowerment and kindness. Plants provide tranquility as the morning light streams in – we hope this space makes every girl smile.
We thank everyone for opening their hearts and minds to making our community and country a better place for all. – Chay Bachar and the POP crew
