The Merrifield College inter-house plays took place on Thursday, 4 May. This year’s theme was “adaptations” and the Grade Twelves selected short stories, which they adapted into a twenty minute one-act play.
Lilitha Madikizela and Amele Majiza, from Aquila House, selected “The Catbird Seat” and the original short story of the same title was written by James Thurber. Emihle Rayi and Amani Sohaba, from Orion House, wrote “The Ritual”, based on the short story “The Lottery”, written by Shirley Jackson.
The adjudicators were Charné van den Berg and Laura-Jean Runchman, both from Stirling High School and the third adjudicator was Dwight Morrings from Merrifield College. Theirs was a tough job as they had to make some really difficult decisions.
It was a successful evening, with the hard work and preparation coming to fruition for the writers and directors.
The overall winner was Orion House, who produced “The Ritual”. It was pleasing to have performances in front of a live audience, who very much appreciated being treated to a wonderful evening of theatre.
